Blog Evolution

The new look for T Town Tommy is about finished. I have always wanted to have buildings from downtown Tulsa somehow incorporated in my various mastheads and looks over the course of two years. Having some of that local flavor sets regional blogs apart.

I want to thank fellow blogger and web designer Steph Waller over at Incurable Insomniac for making some nice masthead graphic for me when I had something awful in use. I want to also thank freelance graphic designer, Oklahoma blogger and author Cullan Hudson over at Strange State for the masthead currently in use on T Town Tommy. Here are the mastheads that where developed and I will be rotating all of them around on this site.

Excuse My Mess

So how do you like the way the new look is going? You will have to pardon my mess while T Town Tommy gets a make over well over due. How do you like the colors? Do you like the new layout? I am by no means a Photoshop wizard so I am still working on the masthead, anyone out there with some Photoshop skills?

If you don't see your site in my blog roll it's because you haven't linked to me yet! I am more than happy to swap links with anyone that puts out a quality blog. Feedback is appreciated help is desperately needed!

Peace Out,

~T

Quality Blogging

I am not AWOL from my blog or part of the writer's strike! Seems many bloggers both in and out of the GLBT world are recently absent from their post. I have seen a ton of stories in the past few weeks that I wanted to share and comment on but lately my life offline has taken up the majority of my time. Between selling my home and doing all the honey-do's I have been putting off and getting ready for upcoming surgery while running a business; time has slipped by and the days have been a blur. I cannot believe Thanksgiving is this Thursday!

Like many bloggers running a blog with daily content of quality takes several hours out of the day with research, writing, graphics and editing/proofing. If the time can't be spent producing something with some merit or interest then don't waste the readers or your stretched time.

Things are settling down with the projects around the house including painting, plumbing, electrical and some carpentry work. I think we have a water leak in the slab somewhere, God forbid I have people jack hammering up my house inside before I can sell it. Not being one to fear trying something new and challenging I saved some major money doing things myself. Finding water leaks in slabs is not on the list of do it yourself home projects.

There is some recent news I do want to briefly touch on one being a growing problem in the US and the other being a scam sending waves through the GLBT blogging community.

The FBI has released the 2006 hate crime statistics and after a decade low the number of crimes against minorities has jumped 8%. 51% where based upon racial bias and 15% percent based on the victims sexual orientation. This trend shows a dangerous path back toward bigotry and intolerance and must be stopped by passing strong hate crime legislation to protect those not in the majority of American society.

The 7.7 percent increase means hate crime offenses reported in 2006 rose to 9,080, compared with 8,380 incidents the previous year. The number of incidents reported in 2005 was the lowest reported in a decade, according to the FBI. – ABC News

This past week the mystery behind the disappearance of one the GLBT blogging community's most successful blogs was revealed. Brat Boy School, for those who are not familiar with the blog, was a chronicle about a struggling fashion model turned conservative political and social blogger. Think of a gay male bloggers version of Tila Tequila that writes at times like Pat Buchanan and whose only other talent is to pose in various underwear and provocative shots to go along with many of the various blog posts. The model/blogger Ethan Reynolds appeared on the front cover of Internationally syndicated Instinct Magazine, a respected Gay news magazine, with an article saying too many of the right things to a gay male audience and almost overnight what was presented as his blog, Brat Boy School started drawing millions of hits daily.

A following of gay men online world wide started reading daily and in some cases interacting online with whom they thought was the model in the hundreds of pictures over a period of almost three years. With the growth of the blog and the increasing audience Brat Boy School grew to encompass MySpace, AOL and Yahoo chats, Amazon.com, postal mail, broadcast emails, modeling, appearance contracts and corporate sponsors. A blog sold as being created by a very cute Las Vegas blogger about his life, modeling career and conservative political views became a business. The blog went as far as providing a complete background bio and photos before the blog was created. For almost three years the charade continued until one of the online characters involved with the growing business blew the whistle when, according to online accounts, items sold on the blog site never got to readers. An investigation started and personal appearances by Gerald Reynolds, playing Ethan Reynolds the face and body of Brat Boy School started to go wrong.

Turns out Brat Boy School and the character of Ethan Reynolds was the brain child of the 40 something year old room-mate turned manager of a Gerald Reynolds the supposed model in the hundreds of pictures archived on the Brat Boy School site. The 27 year old model never wrote a single word of any of the blog post, emails, online chats, or MySpace correspondence and stayed mum to that fact to the news media and online readers for almost three years.

I was personally scammed into thinking that the online character/blogger was who I thought he was when my blog, T Town Tommy, happened to be featured in a few posts and was put on the blog roll for Brat Boy School. I have been a frequent visitor to Las Vegas since the early 70's when my Grandparents lived near downtown. Never missing a chance to keep up the illusion of blogger Ethan Reynolds the roommate/manager went as far as to suggest to me a fellow GLBT blogger new places to dine during my trips back to Las Vegas but always had an excuse to dodge a face to face meeting. The site is now deleted and the truth is out, caveat emptor has been proven to be truer now more than ever, buyer beware. Brat Boy School is an amazing example of using the internet and the online blogging GBLT community to create a total fabrication and fool millions of people worldwide for not days or weeks but for years.

Post 250 in the Can - Time for Some Cartoons

I was checking some blog stats today and realized that I have 250 post published! So to celebrate I thought I would share a find straight from our Saturday mornings as kids. Video Sphere has an excellent guide to all the Loony Tunes Coyote and Road Runner cartoons. A person published all the cartoon clips on YouTube. Hurry though if you want to view any of them as Warner Brothers might possible yank the videos.

Well Today Marks One Year Online for T Town Tommy

Cake

It was one year ago today that I started T Town Tommy! After 228 post and tons of comments and emails, the conversation has been great. I want to thank all my readers, link partners and fellow bloggers, both in Oklahoma and around the world, for all the help and encouragement. I mainly started this blog both to give a face to gay life in Oklahoma and to show that the thoughts of gay people about our world is not that much different from straight people. Looking back at my first post, my writing has gotten better and so has my photo skills. I hope everyone has enjoyed taking this journey online with me and wait until you see what I have up my sleeve this next year. I am working with video and audio podcasters to add a further dimension to T Town Tommy. Be on the look-out for some podcast coming straight from the buckle of the Bible Belt! I knew all those acting classes would come in handy one day.

Thanks again to all of you for making T Town Tommy the success it is today,

Thomas

Calling Out for Gay Oklahoma Bloggers

Oklahoma_gay_pride_2

I have a question for all those in the Oklahoma blogosphere. Am I the only gay blogger in Oklahoma? I know we have an over abundance of great blogs in the state but I am yet to run across any other gay bloggers in Oklahoma. So I am shooting up a rainbow pride cyber flare and would love to hear from any other Oklahoma gay bloggers and add you to my "Friends and Family" blog roll. If your out there give a shout I want to hear from you and possibly pool resources for the common good of the gay community in Oklahoma.

Growing Pains

704285_men_at_work_1

As you may have noticed T Town Tommy is in a growing phase! After the success I have had so far with my site I feel a change is needed. Everything to increased font sizes for my readers to make it easier to read to new graphics, colors and layout is going to make my blog a dynamic stop in the Oklahoma blogosphere. The new layout is to allow for some guilt free commercializing, easier navigation and the addition of new content and upcoming sponsored contest for my readers. During the remodel you may find things not looking quite right, various colors being tested and new mastheads being developed and tested. I will be announcing when the rebuild is finally over and will open up the comments for reporting any bugs you may find. Stay tuned for the polishing of the new look to kick off the New Year! A hat tip to Drew over at Drew-o-rama and his graphics wizardry in helping make all this possible on T Town Tommy.

Blog Photos Update

Adams Hotel Close Up Art Deco
Originally uploaded by T Town Tommy.

Due to the growing number and popularity of my photos I have now moved my photo albums to flickr.com. I have found their web site to be much more feature rich and extremely blogger friendly for photo publication.

For those who are not bloggers but casual readers and enjoy photo collections flicker.com offers sometimes thousands of photos on specific topics. A user account with the web site is free and feature rich in tools and photo publishing capability.

I will be experimenting over the next few weeks sharing some photos hosted on their web site in my post. In order to control the size of my side bar with my growing photo album list everything is now condensed into a flash applet with the flickr.com logo. The applet gives a preview of some of my photos and will take you directly to my online photo gallery. For those with free flickr accounts photos can be downloaded or printed onto posters, postcards and various other media.

Wow what a surprise!

Okieblogawards_1

To my surprise I noticed today that I am in the running for the 2006 Okie Blog Awards for best commentary! To just be one of the nominations considered for this award is a great honor. I am deeply humbled and excited that my hard work has not gone un-noticed. The past three months that I have been back to blogging has been incredible. Some of you have sent emails or posted public comments with nothing but encouraging thoughts and positive vibes. To each of you I want to express my sincere gratitude.

The voting for the Okie Blog awards has started and is open to other Oklahoma bloggers to vote. The nominations and awards are voted on by my peers in the Oklahoma Blogging Community. I feel a serious boost from the honor of being nominated and the winds are most certainly in my sails. If you are an Oklahoma blogger feel free to stop by the Okie Blog Awards page and vote for your favorite Oklahoma blogs!

I'm Baaaaccck!

After a few month absence I am back in the saddle again. Sweating it out in the Oklahoma July heat and beating the path all for your reading pleasure. We got a lot going on in Oklahoma since we last chatted. We have a new mayor in Tulsa, Kathy Taylor. She got busted for voter and tax fraud by her opponent in the mayoral race and still managed to beat the Republican jerk. God help us there may be hope for the people here yet. We have a penis pump trial wrapping up here as well. Seems Judge Donald Thompson needed assistance getting it up under his robe while he dispensed both justice and semen from behind the bench. Oklahoma is such a weird place to live.
I suppose I should explain my absence for the last few months. I fell into a creative slump on doing this blog. I know little to nothing about graphics and less about how to build a web page or use a camera. I was a computer network engineer for years but never thought I would need publishing skills in my life. Good challenge learning and sharing my new found skills though!
Second I realized that I am covering the same story with the same knee jerk reaction as a million other blogs on the internet. Everyone posting there own take on things with only a tiny fraction of all the facts or at best half the facts. The end result being a massive storm of digitized photo shop glossed over and glamorized all for your consumption…bull shit. Cause site hits are king if you are trying to lure advertisers. If I find stories now that don’t smell too ripe or are just too good to pass up I will share. However I will do my best to not add to the bull shit factor already going on out there in the blogsphere.
This blog, T Town Tommy, is going to be about me! My interest, passions, wisdom, and glorious fuck ups I tend to do from time to time. I have a new camera since I last blogged got the expensive canon point and shoot and a book on photoshop.  Still am clueless about how my friend Drew over at Drew-o-rama made the cool banner for T Town Tommy. However with a little luck and a lot of help from my friends I am planning on keeping you the reader and myself entertained and informed.
Stay tuned for post on my life and unique take on the world.
